In order to maintain a logical, consistent, and fair pricing system, most services are priced according to a fixed price schedule.  In other words, you will know the cost up-front, before any work begins.  The fixed price schedule includes various levels of service.  You may choose one tailored to your objectives and budget.

why I use prices, not hourly rates
Billing by the hour doesn’t put the focus on what you really want — a “solution” to your problem, or a “vehicle” to help you realize a goal or objective.  The price should reflect the value of the work, not the amount of time employed to finish it.

Consider this excerpt written by Derrick Van Mell in an article entitled, “Why We Don’t Bill by the Hour,”

"To value each hour of work equally and to price and manage each hour is as corrosive a policy as any creative group of professionals could devise.  To pretend that each hour is worth the same as every other is ridiculous.  A brilliant insight can come in a flash, and save a client from disaster or find him millions.  Other hours are dull or wasted and lead nowhere.  It’s clear that billing by the hour is unfair to everyone.

***
We avoid all the problems of billing by the hour by working only for a fixed fee based on a clear scope of work.  This puts the onus on us, and not the client, to manage our time.  We’re the experts in our field; it’s why we’re hired in the first place.  A fixed fee further improves trust by keeping communications open.  Our clients don’t hesitate to share a worry or idea because they know that they won’t get billed for those six minutes."

Billing by the hour leads to many illogical conclusions.  It can encourage the lawyer to work slowly and refrain from seeking efficiencies that can be derived from automation.  Or consider the inexperienced attorney, working through his first Trust-based estate plan, who might spend hundreds of hours developing what he perceives to be an effective document.  But ask yourself:  Is the inexperienced attorney’s solution as good as the solution developed by the experienced estate planning attorney in a fraction of the time?
